Dialux Compound is very effective method of honing and polishing a cutting edge. Initially developed for use in the dental and jewelry industries, Dialux has proved to be one of the best compounds for knife stropping.
Dialux Compound has complex composition, involving different abrasive materials and grain sizes. The grain sizes are not categorized according to FEPA. For more information, please refer to the table below, where the primary abrasive component and its average grain size are specified. Grains of Dialux Compound can be cracked down to their smaller primary crystal size.
If you are unsure what compound to purchase, we recommend the universal White Dialux for ultra-fine sharpening and polishing. If you have a dual-side strop, you second choice should be Gray Dialux as preliminary step, to be followed by White Dialux.

Dialux Compound can be used with any strop made of smooth or coarse leather, balsa or felt. Smooth leather is the best strop material for Dialux.
Dialux Compound does not require any preparation. However, you may experience some difficulty applying hard Dialux compound to the strop. In such cases, you can gently warm the compound to make it softer. A more radical option is to soak the compound in ethyl alcohol, vodka or white spirit for a short amount of time. However, this is best avoided.
You will not be able to fully remove the compound after applying it to the strop. If you want to use your strop both with and without compound, you must therefore keep one side clean. If you want to switch between one compound and another, consider buying an extra strop.
Compound residue accumulates in the leather during stropping. If stropping performance gets worse, remove the residue with a knife spine or special tool, and apply fresh compound.
