Etching Abrasive Stones with Ferric Chloride

Cleans and opens the working surface of copper-tin bonded abrasive stones

    Purpose

    Opens the stone surface

Etching helps clean and open the working surface of copper-tin (metal bond) abrasive stones, making them more aggressive and effective.

    Compatibility

    For metal-bonded abrasives

Suitable for metal-bonded abrasives made of copper, tin, or their alloys, including CBN and diamond stones.

    Safety

    Handle with care

Always wear gloves, avoid inhaling vapors, wear a mask, and do not allow skin contact or ingestion.

    Preparation

    Simple 2:1 solution

Mix 100 g of dry ferric chloride (FeCl₃) with 200 ml of warm or hot water. Use a plastic or glass container and stir until fully dissolved. Stir until fully dissolved.

    Etching Methods

    Three ways to apply

Full immersion — only for stones removed from the blank. Light etching takes 15–20 minutes, deep etching takes 30–40 minutes.

Partial immersion — for stones mounted on aluminum blanks. Fill the container to about 80% of the stone’s height and do not let the solution touch the aluminum.

Surface application — for careful etching without immersion. Moisten a cotton pad or sponge with the solution, apply every 20–30 seconds, total duration 10–12 minutes.

    After Etching

    Finish the process properly

    Rinse thoroughly under running water.

If the reaction continues, baking soda can be used to neutralize it.

If available, dress the surface lightly with silicon carbide.

Let the stone dry completely before use.

Warning! Contact with aluminum blanks will cause corrosion.
