Two working surfaces for stone flattening, lapping films, and precision reference work.
Lapping Side
One side of the glass is etched for use with lapping powders to flatten sharpening stones. The 0.5 mm deep etched surface makes the plate more aggressive and also allows swarf runoff, minimizing stiction on finer grit stones.
Smooth Side
The other side is perfectly smooth and flat. It can hold a half wide sheet of full-size sandpaper or lapping film and can also be used as a reference plate for knives, chisels, and planes.
How to use
Wet the lapping side of the glass without pooling water.
Lightly sprinkle the desired powder grit evenly across the surface.
Pre-soak your stones if necessary and mark the surface with a pencil grid.
Lap with even pressure using an X pattern until the pencil marks are removed.
