Hand-shaped natural Belgian Coticule stones for sharpening small blades, carving tools, engraving tools, and razors.
Natural shape
These Coticules are hand-shaped from natural stone pieces that do not fit standard rectangular formats but make excellent whetstones.
Small blades
Useful for pocket knives, carving knives, carving gouges, V-tools, engraving tools, and even straight razors.
Water only
Coticules should be used with water only. They are non-porous, do not absorb liquid, and do not need soaking before sharpening.
Unique shapes
Raw Coticule rocks are quarried, shaped, and finished by hand. Pieces that cannot be cut into standard rectangles are flattened and finished in their natural shapes.
You may receive any of the sizes shown in the photo. The exact shape cannot be chosen.
Sharpening behavior
Coticules are often compared to Japanese water stones in the 8000–10000 grit range, but they can behave like multiple stones depending on water amount, slurry thickness, and pressure.
Less water and more pressure create a more aggressive slurry. More water and lighter pressure thin the slurry and allow the stone to produce a mirror-fine finish.
Natural stone notes
• Hairline fractures are normal.
• Size, color, and exact composition may vary.
• The slate backing prevents breakage.
• The backing is structural only and is not used for sharpening.
