Binder
The magnesia binder gives Shapton Pro excellent sharpening quality, high performance, and strong wear resistance.
Steel range
Shapton Pro stones can be used to sharpen knives of any steel, including high carbon, vanadium, and chromium steels.
Preparation
Shapton Pro stones are preliminarily lapped and do not require lapping after purchase.
White #120
For quick steel removal, chipped edges, and pitted edges. Leaves a coarse but consistent scratch pattern.
Moss #220
For fast steel removal in stainless and powder metals with a softer scratch pattern than #120.
Blue-Black #320
For high-carbon steel removal and a cleaner scratch pattern before moving to #1000.
Orange #1000
A popular intermediate stone for moderate stock removal before polishing stages.
Blue #1500
A slightly finer intermediate stone with reasonable cutting speed that starts to polish the edge.
Green #2000
A finer intermediate stone that still removes steel efficiently while beginning to polish the edge.
Wine #5000
The first polishing stone in the progression. Dense, refined, and still capable of light metal removal.
Melon #8000
A polishing stone that leaves a very fine finish with a microscopically fine scratch pattern.
Yellow #12000
Designed for extremely fine edges and bright mirror finishing, especially for fine woodworking tools.
Purple #30000
A highly refined finishing stone with 0.48 micron particle size for the finest polishing stages.
Use and care
Shapton Pro should be used with water as a lubricant. Do not soak Shapton Pro stones in water for more than a few seconds.
Use a splash of water or a water spray during sharpening. Never store the stones in water and never dry them near heat.
