Hi,
In most sharpening guides, the recommended grit progression is roughly halving the previous grit size — for example:
-
400 grit ≈ 40/28 μm
-
800 grit ≈ 20/14 μm
Your 1000 grit is around 14/10 μm, so the jump from 400 → 1000 is possible, but it won’t be quite as efficient as going 400 → 800.
It also depends on the steels you sharpen and how well your 400 grit stone leaves a clean, consistent scratch pattern. If the 400 finishes cleanly, the 1000 grit may still remove the scratches without much trouble.
