This is more of an addition to your maintenance kit rather than a replacement.
I’d recommend using it after about 1.5 years of regular stone use, especially if you notice the surface becoming glazed or less effective. It’s not strictly necessary on new stones.
Be cautious with aluminum blanks — after etching, the abrasive layer becomes exposed and more aggressive. You can lightly lap the surface with silicon carbide powder to bring out the abrasive, or leave it as-is — but make sure to neutralize the acid reaction with a baking soda solution.
Again, this is a complementary method — ferric chloride doesn’t replace silicon carbide, and vice versa. Each has its role in maintaining your stones.
